Porcelain Crowns

Dental crown abroad

When a tooth is cracked, decayed, or damaged, a crown may need to be fitted onto the tooth.  Crowns can be made of porcelain, gold and other metals, acrylic resin, or an amalgam (a mix) of these materials. Porcelain crowns typically have the most realistic appearance, although they tend to be less durable than other materials. Crowns can whiten, reshape, and realign existing teeth, adding to a healthy and vibrant smile.

Preparing the Tooth and Crown


During your first visit, the dentist will numb the tooth to be crowned and remove the decay in or around it. The tooth is then rescultped to provide an easy fit for the crown. This is a painless process that is performed in the dentist's chair.

An impression of your teeth is then taken and sent to the dental lab where permanent, custom-made crowns are created (this usually takes weeks in the UK bacause of capacity problems). During this interim period, temporary crowns made of an acrylic resin are fitted onto the teeth.

Applying the Crown


On your next visit, the dentist removes the temporary crown and fits the permanent crown onto the teeth. He or she makes sure the crown has the proper look and fit, and then cements the crown into place.

A perfect tooth replacement will have all the qualities of natural teeth: It will have a degree of translucency, it will be tooth-coloured, it will be extremely hard and rigid and it will be bio-compatible and therefore non-allergenic. Gold crowns or metal-ceramic crowns do not fulfil these requirements, but all-ceramic crowns and bridges made from the zirconium oxide (also called zirconia) do.

"Each form of foreign material used in dentistry takes us into the realm of residual risk. Total freedom from risk can only be achieved with autogenous (self-generated) materials. But we can reduce the risk considerably by using all-ceramic crowns and bridges made from zirconium oxide," says Dr. Murn from Dent-IQ dental Clinic in Slovenia, a dermatologist with particular interest in environmental medicine.

Dr. Novak, a dentist and board member of the International Society of Holistic Dentistry (GZM), is convinced: "If we use metal-free ceramic materials such as zirconium oxide, we can make the residual risk for the patient virtually disappear."

Perfect aesthetics and unique durability

Dent-IQ's in-house dental laboratory in Slovenia manufactures inlays abroad, dental porcelain veneers abroad, crowns abroad and bridges abroad from zirconium oxide. They consist entirely of this ceramic and contain no metal whatsoever. In Germany, KaVo has been officially certificated as being absolutely bio-compatible and anti-allergenic for the patient.

Dentists do not always offer all-ceramic zirconium oxide products. Sometimes a cheaper material such as gold or a metal-ceramic combination may be offered by other dentists. Not only are they not aesthetically pleasing, but they are also not bio-compatible and are not as hard and rigid as zirconium oxide.
